The Tools You Need

  • Tape measure
  • Chalk line
  • Drill
  • Roofing nails
  • Ladder
  • Wood and metal roof screws
  • Nail pouch or tool belt
  • Metal snips

The Steps To Follow

Step 1: Measure the roof

The first step to installing the metal roof is to measure the roof. You have to measure the height and add the kind of overhand you wish to add. Generally, the height would be anywhere from 2 to 4 inches. You should also measure the roof's length all around. This way, you can get the materials needed for the roof and the edging.

Step 2: Decide on the metal roof

You can choose from two types of metal roofing. A V-Crimp metal roofing is simpler to install as its installation doesn’t require any lap screw. An R-Panel metal roofing is a panel metal sheet with high ridges. Check out these two styles and decide which type will work best for your home.

Step 3: Prepare the metal roof

The typical installation guide for metal roofing suggests removing the old shingles. Though not necessary, this will give your metal roofing a cleaner appearance and you do not need to worry about your old shingles later. It's pretty easy to remove the old shingles. You simply have to tear off the composite shingles with roofing shovels. After removing the old shingles, you can use a roof felt as the base of the new roof.

Step 4: Install the Metal Roof

The edging should be installed first. This should run around the roof's perimeter. Secure the edging in place by hammering the roofing nails.

Two People Should Do The Trick

For the metal roof installation, another person should help you out. At the right side of the home or building, run metal sheets one at a time. You should start with the section that runs vertically along the metal roof. Find the two foot sections using your chalk line. You should secure the metal panel every 2 feet across as you move on. The first metal sheet should overlap with the second. If you are using the V-Crimp metal roof, the crimps should lie on top of each other. The R-Panel metal roof should have a lip to overlap the ridge.

Move on to overlap the metal sheets until all metal sheets have been installed. When you are on the last metal sheet, do not forget to measure the remaining space past the roof's edge. Mark the row beneath the edge. Cut along the row using the metal snips then screw in the last metal sheet.

The Last Touches

Finally, you may now proceed to the installation of the trim work to cover the sides of the roof's edges as well as the top peak. You also need to notch the middle so that will blend over the ridges more easily.
