RV Rubber Roof Replacement Is Not Always An Option
RV rubber roof replacement may not be the best option. It could be a very expensive undertaking, because of it's high metal roofing cost. Repairing the rubber roof of your recreational vehicle may be a better alternative. Recent models of these vehicles have been provided with rubber roofs, because these vehicles are designed for use in all types of weather.
Conventional Metal Or Rubber?
The conventional metal roofing is susceptible to rust and other problems and they are more expensive than rubber roofs. However, RV roofs made of rubber are more sensitive to wear and tear compared to metal roofs. Therefore, RV owners may need to learn how to repair this particular kind of roof, because the cost of RV rubber roof replacement is prohibitive.
Maintaining Your Roof
You can learn how to install metal roof for the RV, but RV rubber roof replacement, particularly with a metal roof may not be a possible alternative, because of the high metal roofing cost. You may have to be content with repairing and providing the proper treatment for the rubber roof, especially when you are on the road. The repair of the rubber roof may be required, because it may develop a leak and this may require patching. And because of the continuous stress applied by the caulking on the edges, these may need to be sealed from time to time. Routine repairs are advisable to prevent permanent damage. Just remember to use lap sealants instead of those made from silicone, because the latter is not compatible with rubber.
On-The-Road Fix Ups
Here are some of the supplies that you need to keep on hand while on the road in case there is a need to patch the rubber roof:
- The catalysts and base of the sealants
- Masking tape
- Powerful drill
- Mixing wand
- Putty knife
- Roller
- Paint brush
The Steps
Step 1: The first step is to apply the masking tape for sealing the gutters that are located around the RV roof. This tape will also ensure that the sealants do not run out and spill out.
Step 2: The next step is to combine the catalysts with the base of the sealants and then utilize a power drill and big mixing wand to mix them together. However, be careful that the drill does not penetrate the twin battery pack.
Step 3: Continue mixing for 10 minutes and then see if the mixture has become thicker than paint.
Step 4: You can now apply the mixture on the damaged parts of the roof by using a roller, a paint brush or a putty knife.
Roof Repair
When performing the repair of the roof, instead of RV rubber roof replacement, there are certain things that you should remember:
- Always remember to thoroughly clean the roof before applying the sealant.
- All of the caulking and patch materials should all be removed by scraping.
- You can eliminate any loose debris from the surface by utilizing a broom.
All kinds of oxidation and dirt should all be removed and if there is any mold or mildew, grease or stains, you may apply a rag dipped in a mixture of water and bleach or you can use a scrubber.
